Authentic Discernment: The Courage to Be Real Before God
To “err on the side of authentic discernment” means choosing truth over appearance, substance over performance, and God’s desire over our own comfort. It is the opposite of spiritual theatrics. It is the quiet, steady willingness to let God shape us in ways that may feel small, hidden, or costly — but deeply real.
Today’s Gospel shows the Twelve being chosen and sent in a way that stripped them of self-protection. They were not sent with comfort, clarity, or control. They were sent with dependence.
Authentic discernment always leads us there.
It asks us to name what is false in us.
Not sinful — simply false. The masks, the habits of self-reliance, the subtle ways we cling to comfort or recognition.
It asks us to choose what is true, even when it is uncomfortable.
Truth often feels like poverty at first. But it becomes freedom.
It asks us to let God interrupt our preferences.
Discernment is not about choosing what feels spiritually impressive. It is about choosing what is spiritually honest.
What This Looks Like in Real Life
For me, for example, — I aspire to be a servant who serves, leads, builds, and carries others — and authentic discernment often means:
• Letting go of the pressure to be everything for everyone. Self-denial sometimes means stepping back, not stepping up.
• Choosing depth over activity. Minimizing comforts may mean minimizing noise, busyness, or the need to constantly produce.
• Allowing God to prune even good things. Authentic discernment is not about clinging to every ministry, every project, every role. It is about asking: Which of these is truly mine?
• Accepting the path that stretches you spiritually, not the one that flatters you. The Twelve grew because they were uncomfortable — not because they were celebrated.
A Gentle Invitation for Today
If you want to err on the side of authentic discernment, ask yourself:
What is God asking me to release so He can send me more freely?
Not in a dramatic way. Not in a self punishing way. But in a way that makes room for grace.
Authentic discernment is simply this:
choosing the path that makes you more available to God.
And that path is always marked by truth, humility, and quiet courage.
